Friday, May 17th is Bike to Work Day

A growing network of bicycle trails and routes means more bicyclists across Central Oklahoma and 2013 is shaping up to have the most successful Bike to Work Day yet. This year’s official day will be celebrated throughout the Central Oklahoma region Friday, May 17.

Seven Central Oklahoma communities are hosting rides that include bike and t-shirt giveaways and door prizes. Bike to Work events in Edmond, Oklahoma City, Norman, Yukon and Guthrie will occur the morning of May 17th. Moore’s event is the evening of the 17^th and Midwest City’s Spirit Ride is Saturday morning, May 18th.

ACOG has released an interactive map showing all of the area’s bicycle trails, lanes and routes as given to them by member entities. It can serve as a valuable tool to help Bike to Work participants determine how to bike to their workplaces or to city events.

Bike to Work Day 2013 is part of a national campaign to promote bicycling as a healthy and efficient transportation alternative. The League of American Bicyclists has recognized the month of May as National Bike to Work Month since 1956 and National Bike to Work Day annually offers metropolitan areas the opportunity to call attention to the benefits of bicycling and to increase safety awareness among bicyclists and motorists.

Additionally, METRO Transit‘s first official Free Fare Friday coincides with Bike to Work Day on Friday, May 17th, and all of their buses are equipped with front-loading bike racks.

All Bike to Work Day participants are encouraged to follow the rules of the road and observe safety rules.
